Normally on this
blog I look at big games or storyline topics. This one is a little different.
This is something that is really interesting and very unique. Call it lucky or
call it coincidental, that’s your call.
The Elite 11
program has produced many successful stars such as Andrew Luck, Matt Cassel,
Ryan Mallet, Tim Tebow and more. They have one star from their program this
year that will soon be big time. They also had a star playing on the biggest stage
of college football.
Monday night in
the final National Championship game of the BCS era, former Elite 11
quarterback and current Heisman winner Jameis Winston was down by 4 and needed
a touchdown to secure a win for the Seminoles. Winston had a spectacular season
leading up to the game but struggled early on. The Tigers defense was harassing
him. He was getting hit, getting sacked and even fumbled. However on the last
drive, the redshirt freshman showed the poise of a 5th year senior,
going 6 for 7 for 77 yards. Winston went the length of the field to throw the
game-winning touchdown. The Tigers defense kept Winston in the pocket trying to
contain his athleticism. Winston beat them with his arm and brain. It may have
surprised people; others may have seen it coming. One thing we know for sure,
Trent Dilfer, Elite 11 tutor, definitely saw it coming in 2011.
Fifty-eight
seconds into the video, Dilfer says exactly what everybody has been saying all
season.
“Woah, Jameis
Winston. Unbelievable.”
Then from a
minute and 6 seconds in, Dilfer says the exact scenario that America was
watching before their very eyes Monday night.
“It’s gonna come down
to a 3rd and seven. 4th quarter. Down by four. And
they’re going to keep you in the pocket. And they’re not gonna let you be fast.
And quick. And all that. And that’s gonna be a mistake, because you’re going to beat them here (points to head).
Monday night,
Winston had zero rushing yards on the final drive. He fit in a nice pass to
Rashad Greene which turned into a 49 yard play. Then, with the game on the line
and just 13 seconds left, Winston won the title with his head. He saw the
mismatch of a 6-5 receiver Kelvin Benjamin on a 5-11 corner in Chris Davis.
Winston simply put the ball up high on an in-cut in the face of a blitz so that
Benjamin could pluck it out of the air for the game-winning touchdown.
